Latin America has always been wrought by political violence, from civil wars, guerilla forces, terrorism and military takeovers. Such conflict not only destroy lives and property,but they also end up detracting the government from other issues that need to be addressed, such as economic problems. Economic problems result from social inequalities, poverty and low growth which have been left without much assistance and have been escalating in gravity through time. These problems persist and have become major issues in the region.
Poverty and Inflation
Hunger and malnutrition is everywhere in Latin America and in dire need of help. Despite tries to raise food for the people it was not enough to cover everyone. As the governments and nations are involved and concentrated with relations and outside forces, the countries in the inside are rotting away with poverty. The more people leave the more evident it is that poverty is a problem. Poverty has many causes but inflation is doubling the damage. The inflation only in Venezuela reached up to 27% which the government had no response to. Industries do nothing but worsen the conditions for living. Since there are less strict on the policies after bribes, chemicals are often used freely and released into the environment contaminating not only the resources but also food supplies.
Drugs
Drugs is a great problem in Latin America as many of it is harvested in the region and is used. The addiction leads the people to using up all the money they can lay their hands on the drugs. This rises to criminal and gang activity to get more drugs. Mexico is one of the countries in the head to prevent further damage from drugs and moving towards it. The long tradition of looking the other way for a little bit of bribery was broken and heavily inspected. Mexico has been strong and unrelenting in the fight against drugs and would go at all costs to win even with a few gunfights and battles.
Presidential Elections
As the new presidential elections are upcoming, the candidates are working hard to gain popularity. In countries such as Honduras, people want a new president from the old one before the coup and are greatly anxious for the new elections. In other countries such as Chile, the female president is gaining great amounts of popularity and may make a new pattern in the history of Latin America. Either for good or bad reasons, the elections that are occurring in so many countries this year will make a great issue as the people will try to pick the representative who will make their life better than in the past. Everyone hopes that this president will be better or follow the previous president and bring their country to glory and prosperity.
